Daniela Bleymehl dominated Challenge Geraardsbergen (swim 1.9K / bike 90K / run 21K) as she continued to tune her form ahead of Ironman Frankfurt, one of her target events for the first half of the year. The German long distance triathlon specialist impressed with a new course record, despite being in the middle of a hard training block in preparation for Frankfurt.
Bleymehl hit the bike leg with a 90 second deficit, but went out hard on a circuit that borrows many of roads used in cycling's spring Classics and took over the lead after 40km of riding, going on to set the fastest bike split of the day in 2:26:07. Fully in control throughout the run, Daniela extended her lead steadliy to take the win by over two minutes.
The race went well, but it looked easier than it actually was. I had some pretty tough times during the race as I had a good training block after Challenge Samorin to perform well at the Mainova IRONMAN Frankfurt in two weeks. I was training hard the days before the race, instead of recovering as usual, which makes me feel even happier about the result.
